History

In 1837, the government initiated the construction of the first railroad connection between Veracruz and Mexico-City, covering 19,000 kilometers by the year 1910. 1910 was an important date in history for yet another reason: it marked the outbreak of the violent Mexican revolution.

The railway system turned out to be a decisive factor in the war that raged all over the country: famous revolutionary leaders like Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa made use of the ´iron horses´ in order to dispatch their troops swiftly over enormous distances. The contribution of the railway system in overthrowing the dictatorial Mexican government can not be overemphasized.
